Joint conference Elmo & Citizens Inquiry in Bergen 24/4-28/4 2023

Metis hosted the final Learning, Teaching and Training (LTT) event for the two Erasmus+ projects Elmo and Citizens Inquiry at Media City in Bergen. As part of the LTT, we arranged a dissemination workshop and the entire teaching staff at Metis attended. The workshop explored the history of the two projects and some practical examples of Case Studies (student activities) the partners have worked on. The presentation aligned with three EU horizontal goals:

1) Environmental and climate goals

2) Innovative practices in a digital era

3) Common values, civic engagement and participation

The workshop started with Dr Kevin Burden´s lecture on mobile learning and the iPac-model, before the partner institutions presented their multimodal Case Studies about environmental issues and suitable digital applications.

The following Prezi presentation is a summary of the Metis partners´ case studies. Find it here.

The purpose of the workshop was to encourage participants to apply the principles of Elmo and Citizens Inquiry to an area within their own teaching/education practice.

Curipod student debate:

As part of the Elmo project Metis organized an online transnational student debate on environmental issues, using the application Curipod, in which the students shared their thoughts about local environmental problems in their respective countries.

ELMO

Teacher Mobility Elmo: Learning, Teaching and Training event in Imperia, Italy 3-7 October 2022

Participants from Metis: Bård Inge, Andreas, Ann Kristin and Anbjørg

Day 1

We were welcomed by the principal of our host school in Imperia, Liceo Statale G.P. Vieusseux.

Thereafter a workshop on mobile learning:

Dr Kevin Burden, University of Hull, who is an expert on mobile learning,  explained how mobile learning came about. When the iPhone and the iPad was introduced, it allowed you to do most things you do on a computer, and yet you could move about without being restricted to time and space (for example the classroom).

We use the  iPac-framework to evaluate three important aspects with usin mobile devices for learning:

  • Personalisation: customisation and agency
  • Authenticity: context and task
  • Collaboration: conversation and cocreation: focus on dialogical process

Finaly that day a guided tour in the historic part of Imperia, by Davide, our host and the school´s coordinator for international projects and partner in the Elmo-project.

 Day 2

Case Study 3 and iPac assessment

  • Anbjørg presented her Case Study 3 Description, student activity Plastic Ocean, ebook (using Book Creator). Kevin made use of it to demonstrate iPac-assessment and the iPac teacher task survey.
  • Bård Inge demonstrated Curipod. A good example of an interactive activity – the idea is to use it for the online student debate/discussion on sustainability later on.
  • Kevin Burden lectured about innovative mobile learning activities.

Day 3

Two well prepared students from the Italian school lectured us about how to structure a debate and judging a debate. Davide has shared their presentation in the ItsLearning folder. This excellent debate method will be useful for the partners when they plan debate activities with their students.

Thereafter, we shared our Case Study 3 presentation videos. Here you can see Metis‘ contribution: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-in0ET1dZ8E

Day 4

Excursion to Genoa:

Guided tour of Genoa, by Davide, our Italian hosts Davide and Emanuela

Teacher Mobility: Joint transnational meeting Elmo and Citizens Inquiry in Valencia, Spain 04.04-09.04 2022

Erasmus+ combined two projects Elmo and Citizens Inquiry in a joint transnational meeting in Valencia, Spain 4-9 April 2022.

The Citizens Inquiry project is led by the University of Hull (England) and have partners from Germany, Spain and Metis from Norway, whereas the Elmo project is led by Metis and have partners from Greece, Italy and Spain. Metis along with the partner school from Valencia participate in both projects.

The two projects include different elements but share a common topic Climate and Sustainability. Both projects have focus on student activities, using mobile learning tools and various applications.

The purpose of the joint event in Valencia was to share the Case Studies (student activities) we have worked on with our respective students and discuss the theoretical framework for our Case studies, the so called iPac-model developed by Dr Kevin Burden (the University of Hull).

Read more here: http://www.mobilelearningtoolkit.com/ipac-framework.html

The Metis team shared the activity their students from the English and Spanish elective courses have worked on, a tourist trail in Bergen with focus on sustainability, using the application Actionbound. See more about Actionbound here: https://en.actionbound.com

The Metis-presentation of Actionbound, inspired the Spanish team to arrange a historic tour for us round Valencia, using Actionbound.

Citizens Inquiry – Young Citizens for Change – developing Environmental Activism in Young People through creative Citizen Inquiry

In Valencia the students from Hull, Bremerhaven, Valencia and Bergen presented their project. The Metis students talked about the beach clean-up they had attended as a school project in Bergen and showed the beach location and findings using JigSpace. Not as interactive as intended, as the other participants did not have access to mobile phones or tablets, which would have enabled them to view the 3D images on their own device, and thus participate.

Besides the presentations, the students took part in Kahoot activities and discussions about climate issues in new mixed-nationality groups.

There was also time for cultural activities:

1. Guided tour in the old town of Valencia using the app Actionbound. The students and teachers walked together with participants from Valencia serving as guides.

Student Mobility (C7) Viterbo, Italy 28/03-31/03 – 2023

Host school: Santa Rosa da Viterbo, Italy.

Cooperation schools from Greece, Italy, Malta, Lithuania, Turkey and Norway.

Students from Metis were Nora Herland, Amanda Bjærum, Agate Ødven and and Emeli Eikeseth. In addition, their mentors Sara Berge Økland and Sten Are Edvardsen participated.

Collaboration theme: How to create inclusive communities in schools?

We spent five days in the Italian city of Viterbo. Viterbo is about 10 miles north of Rome. For several periods, Viterbo was the residence of the Pope, including when threats such as plague and conflict have ravaged the country. Viterbo is one of the very few Italian cities still

surrounded by city walls. Today, Viterbo is a tranquil, safe and perhaps romantic place where tourism does not allow itself to dominate.

On the first day of activities, we were warmly welcomed by the host school. The students learned Italian songs which they performed for each other. This was extra nice as we visited a music school. All of the students at the music course in Italy could play at least two instruments. We then had lunch together at a local restaurant and were given a guided tour of Viterbo.

The next day we went on a day trip to Rome. We went via St. Peter’s Basilica and visited the Vatican City. On this day, the Pope was outdoors to meet crowds and bless newlyweds. We then went on in the direction of the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon. The tour ended in the area at the ancient excavations. The students then had free time and the Metis students visited the Colosseum and had lunch. We then went shopping and ended our Rome tour at the Spanish Steps, before traveling by train back to Viterbo.

During the trip, we also visited Villa Lante in Bagnaia. This is a lovely garden from the 16th century built for, among other things, recreation and hunting. In recent times, Villa Lante is often used as film set, e.g. the Netflix series The Young Pope.

For each student mobility in this P.O.L.I.S. project, the students have come up with three rules or main points that call for action for a better Europe. On the last day, our students voted on which rules were the best.

The students from Metis spent a lot of time together with the students from the other countries and we all left with a positive impression, new acquaintances and memories that will last.

Student Mobility (C6): Athens, Greece 27/11–2/12 – 2022

Host school: 4ο EPAL ATHINA

Participants from Metis: four students from Salg, service og reiseliv (Business), Stephanie, Helene, Maximilian, Jonathan and two teachers: Cathrine Olsen, Katrine Ness

Collaboration topic: Promoting citizenship educatiOn at school to build Inclusive Societies.

Each partner school, worked on different sup-topics and prepared a presentation to be shared in Athens.

The Business students from Metis worked the following subtopic:

“Young people have been turning away from established forms of democratic participation. Why is this happening?”

After working on the topic in class, the students prepared the presentation to be shared in Athens: an interactive task where they used the application Curipod and included history, statistics etc.

The weather in Athens was bad, it was raining worse than in Bergen – and we Norwegians got all the blame for the bad weather since it never rains in Athens.

Despite the bad weather, there was time for cultural activities:

1. Everyone went by bus to visit the SOUNIO Archaeological Site https://www.visitgreece.gr/experiences/culture/archaeological-sites-and-monuments/the-archaeological-site-of-sounio/

2. Guided Tour To ACROPOLIS and ANCIENT AGORA – it was wonderful! And finally the sun was shining!

3. Lunch in the historic area Monastiraki Plaka and the Greek students took the students to the popular flee marked in Monastiraki.

4. Dinner at “MONOPATI” with live music program. Good food, lovely company, dancing and a lot of fun for everyone.

5. As a souvenir to bring home, the host school arranged an Art workshop where everyone got portraited by art-students.

It was a great trip, well organized by the Greek host school. The Metis students loved it as well as their teachers. Athens is a wonderful city; spectacular history and lots of things to see and do. New friendships were made and hopefully this transnational experience will inspire to further work across countries.

Student mobility (C5) to Istanbul, Turkey 2/10-7/10 2022 (P.O.L.I.S)

Host school: YILDIZ AHMET ARAYICI ANADOLU LİSESİ-İSTANBUL

Collaboration topic: Promoting peace, respect and tolerance in inclusive societies.

Each partner school, worked on different sup-topics and prepared a presentation to be shared in Istanbul.

The students from Metis worked on the following topic: Multicultural diversity. They created a 10-minute-long film where they presented Bergen as a multicultural city, as well as a Kahoot about multiculturalism in Bergen, for the others to partake in.

As for the first day, the host school arranged a full day at school with Istanbul gifts to all participants, as well as presentations by each team and a multitude of cultural experiences; home-cooked traditional Turkish food, Turkish music and dance.

Besides activities at the host school, the visitors were offered a rich program with cultural activities in the historic city of Istanbul:
